Data Collection Methods

Our data collection procedures were primarily observation and interview based. We tried to assess how users and stakeholders interact with the prototype, and what their complaints about it were. Due to COVID procedures disallowing us to create physical, touchable objects to act as our prototypes, we decided against doing natural setting data collection measures. We instead, created screen prototypes that we presented to our representative users. We showed the functions of our prototype and observed and recorded their reactions and feedback. We also offered follow up questions to gain a deeper understanding of the pros and cons of our project design in certain aspects.

Design Successes

  • Really easy to learn

  • Easy to understand user interface

  • Stops were easy to understand

  • “Does exactly what I’d want it to do well.”

Tensions and Critiques

  • Needs a physical button layout or prototype to show.

  • Indication that it is a monitor using better shapes within prototypes.

  • Screen can be shaped a different way to be height inclusive

  • Include another legend for other stop legends to see where else the bus can go

  • Prototypes need the GPS tracking to allocate estimated time calculations between bus routes.

  • Should include next buses in the arrival time

  • Empty space in some screens

Future Design Plans

About: Image

To truly make our design exceptional, we aim to slowly implement the exceptional functions such as GPS tracking and braille buttons for accessibility. If the project secedes more than the time frame of one University semester, we can further evaluate and research more about users and make our design more inclusive for a wider audience. We only interviewed two test users as well and we believe that we did not get enough data to completely evaluate our design. In the future, we would showcase our prototype to all previous stakeholders that we interviewed during our contextual inquiry and get feedback from all of them individually. Although our prototypes show the foundation of our design’s functionality, we did not include and brainstorm through ideas in which we can implement other secondary functions. In the future, our design will be revamped to be much more appealing for users, such as the colorway of the terminal and as well as the formatting. For formatting, we have now found that some headers and text boxes are not aligned properly with our terminal screens, so fixing that may get rid of some of the empty space often recognized by our test users. For a second design iteration, we aim to progressively fix these issues to be the most inclusive it can possibly be for a variety of users.
